I have spent countless hours over the past few days following every set
of instructions on this page (and many others), but so far nothing has
worked.

Is there any hope that this is just going to work someday?

Ubuntu 8.10 (2.6.27-7-generic) / Skype 2.0.0.72 / Creative PD1030
