Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

It is perfectly reasonable that Meld "Recommends" python-gnome2-extras -
the Debian Policy Manual says that

"The Depends field should be used if the depended-on package is required
for the depending package to provide a significant amount of
functionality"

Showing line numbers in meld is not a significant amount of
functionality.
