What does middle button do?

Expected behaviour (as per Intrepid): Middle-click / two-finger tap on
icon in Docky will open another instance / window.
Actual behaviour: Firefox / terminal icons animate (bounce) but nothing
happens. Other programs seem to behave correctly, though haven't checked
many.
