Are you really running (a) gnome-main-menu (by Novell) or the (b)
standard 'Menu Bar or (c) GNOME's 'Main Menu' ?

(a) is a window with favorite applications and a 'more' button
(b) is the standard bar shipped in Ubuntu (Applications,Places,System)
(c) is almost the same as (b) but is a simple drop-down menu.
