I too found this irritating.

Attached is a patch that adds in that option, and works (at least
superficially, for me).

There are also a lot of other status options in Pidgin which aren't in
the menu. I understand the need to not clutter it up, but would it be
worthwhile having the options configurable or something, else that
disconnect that Richard Laager mentioned will remain.
