I rebooted again, and know I did write the message down:

Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.

The following error was encountered. You may need to update your
configuration to solve this.

(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "intel" (load failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available.

After I press OK on this message I get a popup, here I can choose to
start Ubuntu in low-graphics mode (and other options), when I do that I
get to see my background wallpaper and icons on the desktop but no
panels.
