Same here with Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 and 4GB Ram.  Worked fine with Ubuntu
8.04 32bit on the same hardware (assumingly because then only 3.5 GB RAM
are available).

I debugged asfxload and traced it down to an error code from the
SNDRV_EMUX_IOCTL_LOAD_PATCH ioctl in seq_load_patch.  Curiously,
smallish soundfonts work.  There are no kernel messages related to this,
and I don't feel like debugging the kernel right now. :)
