I think I may have found a workaround for this problem.  When I go to
Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects and select "None," the crashes
do not occur.  When I select "Normal," they occur about half the time.
I'm using an NVIDIA graphics driver on my computer.  Am guessing this
plus the visual effects is causing the crashes.
