I am having the exact problem as described in Jan Kaessens comment.

openvpn works as a client via command line, but not using network-
manager-openvpn.  I see the additional entries as well when I use the
command 'route' or 'ip r'

The following is what I get when running nm-openvpn plugin:

Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
96.***.**.**   192.168.1.1     255.255.255.255 UGH   0      0        0 eth1
192.168.4.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 tap0
192.168.1.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     2      0        0 eth1
0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0         U     0      0        0 tap0

* = my WAN IP

This restricts me to the VPN lan and I have no way to access anything
else while nm-openvpn is running.
