Hi Stephan,

Tanks, for taking care to respond.

glxgears seems to run just fine. I have GeForce 6100a embaded in mother
of an amd64 machine. I had compiz running before I upgraded from  8.04
to 8.1.

I use the nvidia-glx-177 glx driver as is recomended by the hardware
drivers program. Anyway, I tried to switch to any of them with no
success.


When I try to set visual effects into extra (within the Appearance dialogs) the program seems to search for a proper driver - and then shows an error message: 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'.

Well, for now I wait for some magical update that will resolve this
issue. I tried many things that didn't help so far. If I'll succeed with
anything, I'll let you know.

Hi Mati,

oh, that's good to hear that you aren't affected by problems here any
longer. I'm marking this bug as fixed then, as the info from your
packages.conf/the log doesn't offer any hint what really happened, and
you cannot reproduce it any longer.

As for compiz, I'm not entirely sure what's the problem for you. Do you
have any nvidia-glx-? installed (e.g. nvidia-glx-173, not too sure which
one you need for your graphic card). Does X also use the nvidia driver
instead of nv (you could check by e.g. running glxgears, which won't run
with xv but only with nvidia).

Status in “gtk2hs” source package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

Bug description:
I tried to uninstall all nvidia drivers and than to reinstall them (because couldn't run compiz ufter upgrade to hardy 8.1)
May     be I uninstaled too much...

Now when I try to select the proposed nvidia driver at the
system/admistration/hardware drivers I get this message
