This is a very troublesome problem for me as well.

And what is worse, some things like hsqldb where the password is blank,
it won't let me in even if I try to force it to work like this. It
clearly connected perfectly and then spits out an error message????

henplus --url "jdbc:hsqldb:file:inigma"
using GNU readline (Brian Fox, Chet Ramey), Java wrapper by Bernhard Bablok
