Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-commander

I am using latest Gnome-Commander 1.2.6 in latest Ubuntu 8.10.

This has a set of very serious usability bugs:

a)
the files that you see on the screen as marked/highligted are not necessarily the ones that are internaly marked and then processed by gnome commander.

Here is a sample scenario:

I downloaded archive files from the internet. In Gnome Commander, I
click on one of these archive files with the right mouse button and from
the context menu, I choose to extract the files (only one file is in the
archive) inside. The file will be extracted (good) and now I want to
delete the archive, as it is no more needed.

The archive is still highlighted, so I just click F8, to delete the
curent highlighted file. However, not the highlighted file is being
deleted, but the *extracted* file. I can correct this, when I move the
cursor to the next file and then back to the previous file between the
extracting and the deletion by pressing f8.

Also in otehr cases it seems that gnome commander internaly thinks that
other files are marked than those that are visualy marked on screen.

b)
When you press insert repeatedly, you would expect that file by file the files are marked, one by every key press, without gap. However, instead, the file marking will happen with serious (unwanted) gaps between the files.

Also in other cases, it is not always sure that files are marked that
one wants to mark.

c)
The combination of a+b makes it very dangerous to delete files with gnome commander. GC is the only program that gives me pain with Ubuntu (I dont want to install KDE, because I don't like KDE4) and I have to suffer a lot with it because of these errors in the last few days, but the event which finaly drove me to write this bug report is that a combination of a+b just resulted in that I lost a precious collection of some GB of files.

Error a+b would have a milder effect, if Gnome Commander would delete to the recycle bin, however, they delete without any chance to recover the files. So, on top and independent of a+b, I sugest that you also offer an option to delete to the
recycle bin and switch this option "on" by default.

Thank you
Kaibuntu
