This has been fixed in checkinstall 1.6.1-8 (from Debian), by changing the TRANSLATE default as suggested in previous comments above.
Marking "Fix released", since Jaunty has 1.6.1-8 now.
IMHO it would make sense to have a SRU (StableReleaseUpdate) for this, but somebody else would have to get the ACK and provide the debdiffs (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SRU).
