I experienced the same problem, on a Intel 82945G/GZ video card, running the latest X.org + intel driver release in Ubuntu Intrepid. From time to time (as soon as less than a minute after logging on or as late as 6 hours later) X locks up, goes into a restart loop and I can only start it with the VESA driver. In this time I can't access my ttys (my monitor goes out of sync).
It worked ok on Hardy...
