I can confirm this behaviour.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest version of VB
(2.1.0).  I was not able to capture my mouse until I checked the box not
to show the dialog any longer and <i>then</i> clicked the "Capture"
button.  Now it works as expected.

(I am running this on a Dell Dimension 8300 in 32bit.)
