I confirm the problem for single monitor, out of the box (almost - see
below) installation in Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex

The problem:
After i start screensaver Compiz wallpapers go all black. Even simple opening of a screen saver configuration window and choosing screen saver blanks the wallpapers. 

I suspect that I know how I broke the system. I installed xscreensaver,
but after some playing with it i removed it. Now I have the problem -
original screen saver breaks compiz wallpapers.
