I tested some things, and found the following:

If I log out of Ubuntu, and log in again with Japanese or Chinese as
session language, firefox will not crash even though scim-anthy is on.

The crash only happens when i have english as session language of
ubuntu.

I have also tried opening firefox from terminal with "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
firefox" , but this makes no difference. As long the Ubuntu session is
in English, the crash will occur.

For completion's sake I also tried "LANG=en_US.UTF-8 firefox" from a
Japanese Ubuntu session. No crash there either. It seems like it's the
language that Ubuntu uses that determines whether firefox will crash or
not.

This is on an up to date Ubuntu 8.10.
