Problem has been described as a "classic multiprocessor concurrency
issue" on an external site:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Install_Ubuntu_8.10_(Intrepid_Ibex)_on_an_T400#Suspend.2FHibernate

The fix described therein solved the problem for me. It adds a script
in /etc/pm/sleep.d which switches to single-processor mode before
beginning the suspend process. Attaching /etc/pm/sleep.d/00CPU here
(should be 0755 permissions).

After reboot, this appears to have worked for two consecutive suspend-
resume cycles.
