I have the same problem.  I installed it the program and used terminal
to launch the program and it opened fine and ask to make a slite??
database and to download the USDA food links.  I clicked both boxes and
it tried to load for a few minutes then crashed.

I rm the program and deleted all files that I could find for krecipes
and did apt-get install and put in fresh copy and it does not give me
the boxes but just sets for 40 seconds and then the icon just disappears
from the tool bar.  Running it in terminal gives the same error as above
about kdeinit not reachable.

I am on Intrepid 64 bit kubuntu.
