This is a limitation of the Mesa DRI stack's XAA acceleration method
which the proprietary fglrx driver uses. ATI needs to update their
driver to use the EXA acceleration method otherwise hardware-accelerated
xv and desktop effects may not be used together without this flickering.


We are not going to default to x11 software rendering output as the CPU usage is horrendous with fullscreen video. There's no reason to punish those not using desktop effects or have modern accelerated desktop support in their video drivers.
