That corrected it.  My performance is now about 18 fps, still lower than
I used to get, but it's now playable.

Google Earth now no longer complains, but I accidentally left an image
overlay on it while in software mode and now it freezes a few seconds
after the program starts, as indicated in my bug report here when image
overlays are used.
