[Bug 304672] [NEW] mumble-server startup hangs, stopping rc.2 startup

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mumble-server

Ubuntu Release: 8.04.1
mumble-server version: 1.1.3-0ubuntu2

The rc.2 startup of mumble-server hangs, preventing processes listed
after it in rc2.d from starting (on my installation, this includes
mysql, postfix, nagios, ftp server, atd, cron, and apache).

No messages in syslog.

Cause:
Log destination was changed from /var/log/mumble-server/mumble-server.log to /var/log/mumble-server.log.

Verified by:
/etc/init.d/mumble-server start with both configurations.
With the original configuration, the start script would terminate without a message.
With the /var/log/mumble-server.log log destination, it would emit some logging output, then hang.

Workaround:
To continue the rc.2 startup after a reboot, simply kill the leaf mumble-server process listed under rc in pstree -p.
To make mumble-server work, restore the original log destination, or presumably point it to anywhere where the mumble-server user is allowed to create files.

Seems mumble-server drops root privileges before opening the log file.
However, the more important bug is that a hang in mumble-server's initialization can interrupt normal startup.

** Affects: mumble (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
