You can either request a backport
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BackportsHowto) or in your case, since you say
the latest won't be good, a patch will be needed to fix the problem you
are facing.

You are welcome to work on the patch. If that is not possible, you could
get in touch with someone who can fix this. If that fails, an MOTU will
come across this report eventually and hopefully fix it for you.
