I'm getting this exact same error with scilab in Dapper (Flight 4 + daily updates).

$ scilab
/usr/bin/scilab: line 31: /usr/lib/pvm3//lib/pvmgetarch: No such file or directory

Like the initial reporter, installing pvm remove that error, but the scilab window  disappear immediatelly after starting.
