oh I agree with that.  It was that it removed a database server which 
may be needed on a system that DOESN"T serve mail.  Hula was recommended 
in the docs at ubuntu.com.  None of the other mail handlers were 
covered.  Infact, setting up ubuntu as a server is extremely poorly 
documented.

fyi, installing courier as the smtp server w/o the courier-mta package 
fixed everything and mail now works well, except I can't figure out how 
to increase the size of an email that a user can send through the server.
