Actually, instead of doing it by hand you can click on the "Add
Location" button when installing a plugin and choose a directory
like,say, ~/.eclipse/myplugins. I believe this is the intended way of
installing plugins in a UNIX environment.

Think of it as setting your own "profile" instead of installing stuff
for system-wide use.
