The configuration has been improved in the 1.4.0 packages, but I can
certainly agree that openafs is not the easiest package to set up,
especially if you are talking about setting up an afs server. Setting up
the client should be pretty straight forward, debconf should ask you the
most relevant question. You might have to do a 'dpkg-reconfigure
openafs-client', after installation, to get all intresting questions,
though.

Both Ubuntu and Debian lacks prebuilt kernel modules for most packages.
Building kernel modules for all supported kernels are a pretty big and
complex task. In the Ubuntu case I guess they will only build kernel
modules for packages in main, not for the packages in unuverse. As I
said, using module-assistant it took me 10-15 minutes to build and
install the openafs kernel module.
