Hi Tafadzwa,

Yes its very possible to use wvdial in Ubuntu. To get it installed do:

1. sudo apt-get install wvdial

2. Plug in phone. Some phones require you to specify that you are connecting
in 'modem mode' so make sure that is done before next step.

3. On your console do:

    sudo wvdialconf

    This will automatically detect your modem (which is your phone in this
case) and sets up the correct parameters in /etc/wvdial.conf

4. Using an editor of your choice (yes I know, isn't VI the coolest!), edit
the file /etc/wvdial.conf and specify the correct phone number, login name
and password. Assuming your phone is using the Econet GPRS, you need to edit
your file to have the following: (everything else in the file should remain
as it is! )

Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","econet.net"
Phone = *99***1#

5. To connect, on the terminal just type
    wvdial

Things to note:

i. If you have an internal modem wvdialconf will detect both the internal
and the phone modem and (i think) it only creates a config file for the
first modem device??? (You might need to check the man pages before I lead
you astray on this)

ii. Comments in /etc/wvdial.conf are denoted by a semi-colon as the first
non space character so make sure username and password remain commented and
that your phone is uncommented.

iii. This procedure also works for other modem types as well and restricted
to phones.
