[Ubuntu-ZW] Ubuntu-zw Digest, Vol 30, Issue 1

 I haven't tried 3g on 9.10 yet but it should not be that too hard. Most 3g
modems are dictated as SCSI drives first. In this case you have to
explicitly eject them upon which the mobile broadband tool is automatically
launched. From then on everything should be easy.

If this fails you can try using wvdial. But you have to install the package
and its dependencies first. It seems from 9.04 the folks at Ubuntu decided
the wvdial package was no longer needed, which is hardly the case in
developing countries where dial up is the norm.

After you have installed wvdial ( it might be installIed by default I do
know) you should first eject the modem if it has been detected as a SCSI
drive.
Open a terminal and type: sudo wvdialconf
Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S1   S2   S3
WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 Z -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Modem Identifier: ATI -- 5209.T406.00.A5
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 4800: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 9600: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 19200: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 38400: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 57600: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 115200: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 230400: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Speed 460800: AT -- OK
ttyACM0<*1>: Max speed is 460800; that should be safe.
ttyACM0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK

Found an USB modem on /dev/ttyACM0.
/etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't open '/etc/wvdial.conf' for reading: No such
file or directory
/etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: ...starting with blank configuration.
Modem configuration written to /etc/wvdial.conf.
ttyACM0<Info>: Speed 460800; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

Then go and edit the */etc/wvdial.con*f file so that it looks something like

[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = 99***1#
ISDN = 0
Username = econet.net
Init1 = ATZ
; Password = econet.net
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
Stupid Mode=on

Now type wvdial
clown at nowhere:/etc# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99***1#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99***1#
CONNECT
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Fri Oct 23 23:53:10 2009
--> Pid of pppd: 2058
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> local  IP address 10.1.7.209
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> remote IP address 192.200.1.21
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> primary   DNS address 217.15.120.4
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]
--> secondary DNS address 217.15.120.90
--> pppd: P[08]0[08]

And you are done.

For all it is worth I prefer wvdial
