Jan,

On the travelmate you could probably look at either Lubuntu or Xubunutu, the two Ubuntu flavours that use lxde and xfce, respectively. If the atom is capable of running Windows 7, it would probably also run either of those comfortably with some memory to spare.

The main issue that I have with low memory machines is browsing. Both chrome and Firefox have a nasty tendency to gobble RAM.

Running wine and in illustration program like CorelDraw may also lead to memory hiccups from time to time. Or, at least, that is what I would expect. See what happens and report back.

P.S. I accidentally responded directly instead of to the list. So this is a repost. My apologies.

Many thanks Jaco, that helps a lot.
Is there a specific Linux OS that you can recommend which will run
on that old ACER Travelmate?

Best wishes,

Hey Jan,

Yes to all of those. Mint does run some of their own
repositories, but mostly piggyback on Ubuntu.

In terms of software compatibility, if you use the
packages that you are familiar with, i.e. Thunderbird, banshee
or whichever, the usage is distro independent. So you should be
fully equipped to handle a mint based problem using your skills
refined in Ubuntu. In fact, you'll probably not be completely
lost on any Debian based machine.

that it's my own fault I did not get any replies to the
question in the mail below, I was not very specific about
what I need.

The questions that I have are:

1. How different is Mint from Ubuntu? I will have to help
him, so will the fact that I am reasonably au-fait with
Ubuntu enable me to help him, for example, to migrate his
e-mails and address list fromWin to Mint?

2. Does Mint store directory files in similar fashion to
Ubuntu?

3. Does Ubuntu and Mint share the same software
repositories?

4. What version of Linux will run on the ACER Travelmate
computer?

5. Will Virtualbox install in Mint in similar fashion to
Ubuntu?
Best wishes,
