Thanks Jaco.

The options that I see for CorelDraw are:

1. Wine (I don't have happy memories of the times that I tried to
dabble with Wine)
2. Virtualbox (Mine is running quite well)
3. Dual boot, retaining Win 7 for Corel Draw
4. He must learn Inkscape

My current thoughts are that he should begin with a dual boot, so he
can get accustomed to Ubuntu or Mint with other apps and then boot
on Win 7 when he wants to use CorelDraw. Then he can install
Inkscape on his Linux OS and see if he becomes comfy with it. That
will enable him to decide which way to go in the long run without
any unnecesary pressure.

Does that make sense?

Kind regards,

Jan

Is there a specific Linux OS that you can recommend which

Yes to all of those. Mint does run some of
their own repositories, but mostly piggyback on Ubuntu.

In terms of software compatibility, if you
use the packages that you are familiar with, i.e.
Thunderbird, banshee or whichever, the usage is distro
independent. So you should be fully equipped to handle a

In fact, you'll probably not be completely lost on any
Debian based machine.

think that it's my own fault I did not get any
replies to the question in the mail below, I was not
very specific about what I need.

The questions that I have are:

1. How different is Mint from Ubuntu? I will have to
help him, so will the fact that I am reasonably
au-fait with Ubuntu enable me to help him, for
example, to migrate his e-mails and address list
fromWin to Mint?

2. Does Mint store directory files in similar
fashion to Ubuntu?

3. Does Ubuntu and Mint share the same software
repositories?

4. What version of Linux will run on the ACER
Travelmate computer?

5. Will Virtualbox install in Mint in similar
fashion to Ubuntu?
