Thanks to all for the inputs.<br>

This led me to replace the 64 bit with 32 bit and thus far it is
running like a dream, way better than I had expected and no
comparison to what I had with 64 bit. <br>
<br>
My conclusion is that unless you are running on a brand new system
with at least 2 gig RAM and have advanced requirements, keep to 32
bit. <br>
<br>
My system runs on 1 gig RAM and is an Intel® Pentium(R) Dual CPU
E2160 @ 1.80GHz × 2 <br>

This is a good point unity upgrades were messy when it comes
to the<br>
home folder, from memory the folders I had to delete (back it
up<br>
first!) was something like:<br>
~/.config/compiz-1/<br>
~/.gconf/<br>
One way to test if this is an issue is to long in as a
different user<br>
and see if you have the same problems.<br>
