Problems I've had, and "solutions" :-
I run XUbuntu (upgraded to Intrepid) on my desktop PC, and a fresh
Ubuntu Intrepid with gnome on my notebook.

I've had problems on both machines with audio (and video too).
(note: since hardy and intrepid releases, not recent update)

On the PC...
I had problems way back when upgrading to Hardy; That was due to the
new PulseAudio system that came in since that release, and alsa
drivers that weren't playing nice with my hardware (driver:
snd_intel8x0 | hardware: nVidia nForce2 AC97)
The imperfect solution in hardy was to rip out pulse, and twist
everything into using ALSA directly. After the upgrade to Intrepid it
happened again, and I had to go through all that again. Sound
performance in Intrepid is worse than before Hardy (audacious &
listen
doesn't play anything (it could in hardy), I'm using VLC with it's
sucky playlist now -- but that may have something to do with the
gstreamer codecs... ??!). And for some reason Video gets choppy in
fullscreen; If I remember, this was not the case before taking out
PulseAudio.

On the notebook...
Everything seemed to work better on a fresh install; then again, it
may be 'cause it's different hardware.
I occasionally lose sound on the notebook, or it starts behaving
inconsistenly. I'm developing a game with sound so that might be the
reason; it maight also happen after resuming the notebook from
standby.
Video flickers when using the Compiz effects, but not when they're
disabled (darn).
I've been able to fix/reset sound by restarting X
(Ctrl+alt+backspace).
