I'm also using Thunderbird.
For this list, i usually only get the digest with a summary of mails,
e.g.
Subject: "ubuntu-za Digest, Vol 40, issue 1" (,2,3... etc)
It's a summary of the last couple of mail exchanges.
.. these don't display the characters correctly (as '?'); even looking
at your mail there, the e-acute is wrong.
When looking directly at the email source (in thunderbird, select
mail, press Ctrl+U), the characters are also wrong ('?'), so they are
mangled before they get to my inbox.

Otherwise I get direct replies from people (like you) where the
characters are correct.

I've also checked the web archives of these last couple of mails:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-za/2009-January/date.html
(This was a question recently... even the mail I just sent is archived
already!)
They display the chars correctly. They're not in digest form.

I think it the mail system may be 'Over-digesting' the mails...
I also really dislike the way html mails gets 'scrubbed'.. only
providing a link to the original msg. Scrubbed text embedded in the
mail would have been better!

Other mailing lists send each mail out directly - here i get digests..
which also makes it harder to reply to an individual message. It must
have been an option i selected when joining, but I can't change it
now.
Most of the time a digest is all I really need, but it needs to be
improved IMHO
