Installed Ubuntu on another machine in the mean time. It really helped
having a working system next to me to make comparisons. Although it took
so long to get sorted overall it was a great experience because I've
learned a little more about the Linux command line in a short time that I

eventually completed. When prompted by the installation I removed CD from
tray and pressed ENTER to restart so system could configure (finalize)

After switching around monitors I see that it's still failing.
