I've used TestDisk[0]'s sister, PhotoRec[1], which worked a charm to 
recover files. They are both in the "testdisk" package in Debian, which 
means they're probably in the same package in Ubuntu.

Yeah, I can't stress this enough. I'm a compulsive double-checker 
normally, and when I use dd I just about quadruple check.
