Skype has udergone some changes and updates after microsoft acquisitioned
it around that time.

That, and that cheese works, means that skype itself could be the problem.

Perhaps it stores an obsolete cofig value causing an unforseen bug.

Hilton, have you tried purging skype and all it's settings, before
reinstalling the app?

i.e. Delete the ~/.skype directory (or wherever skype stores config, that
is just my guess and best to confirm this)
