So many things here...

Yes, regressions seem to be coming up more and more.  Also, Unity was a 
train wreck when it came out.  It is improving, but it is still FAR from 
the stability Gnome 2 had.

So, one option is 10.04.4 which is very stable, and still Gnome 2.  The 
kernel is a bit out of date, and some things are no longer packaged for 
it, but for stability, it is king.

Another option is 12.04 and some other desktop managers.  This is 
actually what Linux Mint is; Ubuntu with Cinnamon.  There is some good
