I have, using "sudo service network-manager stop". also tried with nm
removed from the system.

To add, when I send the sim pin via wvdial it unlocks and glows blue
(indicating network coverage).

The only difference in my config:  my modem points to /dev/ttyHSO0, where
the examples use ttyUSB0. the modem responds so don't suspect it as an
issue.
