Hi Bill,

Admittedly, this is not a direct answer to the question that you've
asked, but it does strongly relate to the reason for your question. I
too battled with Gimp 2.7x under Ubuntu 11.xx & 12.04, however, I've
found a couple of solutions.

For quite a while I've been using 11.xx & 12.04, but with the Mate GUI.
This works really well. (solved all the problems, but I also actually
like Unity - go figure) ;~D

However, more recently, and I'll admit that I've only done limited
testing of this solution, I've firstly discovered that a fresh 12.10
installation seems to solve some of the Gimp-related issues. Secondly, I
did a manual upgrade to Gimp 2.8. For some reason my Ubuntu
installations don't seem to have picked up this fairly major Gimp
upgrade, and still run 2.7x if left to themselves. This 2.8x upgrade,
along with the 12.10 fresh install, seem to solve all the niggly issues.
(just be aware that some of the keyboard shortcuts have changed in Gimp 2.8)

Hope this is helpful.

Robin
