If you installed from ppa then you can remove it and it should not show you to update.

I keep on getting prompts to update my Oracle Virtualbox, having to 
download quite a substantial file. I'm a bit nervous about downloading 
stuff that is not in the Ubuntu repositories.

My VBox is running fine on Ubuntu 12.04, what should I do?
