No direct experience of an Acer, but I've installed Ubuntu on a Mecer 
and an Asus ... Acer must be the average, right? :)

And on an HP too. No problems that couldn't be fixed by enabling 
proprietary drivers (for video) and connecting via ethernet first (to 
get wireless drivers). Video and wireless seem to be the most tricky 
areas - and nvidia seems better supported than ATI, but don't take my 
word on that.

You might want to check the exact ATI Radeon model / chipset, and the 
wifi model, for driver support.
