Oh, another thought, hylafax would probably also work over a 3G modem,
cause fax over 3G works just fine.

Hi, dunno if it helps in your case, but if you have a regular telephone
line, and a fax/
modem that works under Ubuntu, then I'd try the hylafax route. It's in
the repo's, and lets you have a fax server on your pc, then you don't
need any service provider to assist you. Also look here:
http://www.aboutdebian.com/fax.htm for help if you want to go that
route.

Thanks so much for all your replies and advice.
The OS I'm using is 10.04 which is why I doubted the technical advisor
at the company contacted when she sounded clueless over drivers for
Linux.
I'm sure one of the company's suggested will do the trick for me.
