I just had a quick look in Ubuntu help and found some instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/UpgradeFromOldVersion


Look under the section heading: " Clean Install Upgrade (not recommended) "

Also note the requirement to retain you old username and password! I suggest
looking for a few more guides to confirm the method.
