Fixed.  Because it was a rndis connection, it is actually shown as
another ethernet connection (eth1) but connected via USB.

The following solved it...

1. Network manager -> Edit connections
2. Edit "auto eth0"
3. Under "IPv4 Settings" tab click on "Routes" button.
4. Tick option "Use this connections only for resources on this network"

So now it doesn't use "eth0" for Internet, but "eth1" instead.  Cool
trick to remember in future
