Firstly I would recommend you do not put this in your ~/.bashrc file since
this file gets executed when ever you open up a terminal or login.

There is a much better way in Gnome. System ->Preferences ->Sessions add
Thunderbird to that.

As for the application opening up on the correct desktop I assumed compiz
had a plugin to save windows states.?
