The lead developer of Zoopy's reply to me:

"Thanks for the feedback.  I can imagine that it’s embarrassing for  
the sender and annoying for the members on the list.  We’ll review  
feedback on our inviter system as more and more people use it — the  
new system is only 1 day old — and implement what we can to make sure  
members use the inviter responsibly."
