OK...  All of the Ubuntu Live CDs I have seen will mount the swap.  Try 
this...

Open a term.
Run 'top' and see the swap space.
Run 'sudo swapoff -s' and look at 'top' again and make sure swap is off.
Try to reformat with gparted.
