[ubuntu-za] Post intrepid 'no sound' problem - ALSA, PulseAudio, & drivers

This seems to be a problem all of a sudden in Intrepid. I never had the
issue on Hardy, but as of a few weeks ago (post update) it cropped up. I
reinstalled and after updating, same thing. Changing driver to OSS helps
in test but still no sound, turn the volume up and you hear crackling. I
have googled my cap full looking for other instances of the problem and
it seems common.

Couple this with some other issues I have been having and Hardy is
starting to look good again. So good in fact that this is the last mail
from the 8.10 installation this weekend.
