After a quick look through the bum documentation it appears that gdm doesn't meet its requirements to be a service, ubuntu didn't always use services and while it appears that most of the startup scripts
have been altered to become services some have still remained plain init.d scripts.

If you click on advanced and go to the services tab you will notice that all of the gdm service fields are empty so I wouldn't trust bums output with gdm.

Anyway why would you want to deactivate gdm? Unless your planning on using kdm or another desktop manager as there are betert ways to change that
